Russian Twist

The Russian twist is a rotational core exercise targeting the obliques. It involves rotating the torso side to side while maintaining a V-sit position, challenging balance and anti-rotation stability.

Secondary Muscles

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Sit on the floor with knees bent and feet flat (or elevated for more difficulty).

  2. 2

Lean back slightly to create a V-shape with your torso and thighs.

  3. 3

Clasp your hands together in front of your chest.

  4. 4

Rotate your torso to the right, then to the left — that's one rep.

  5. 5

Keep your core engaged and move with control.

  6. 6

For added difficulty, hold a dumbbell, medicine ball, or plate.

Common Mistakes

  • Moving only the arms instead of rotating the entire torso.
  • Rounding the lower back.
  • Going too fast and losing control.
  • Holding breath during the rotations.

Safety Tips

  • If you have lower back issues, keep feet on the ground.
  • Focus on the rotation coming from the obliques, not momentum.
  • Start with bodyweight before adding external load.
  • Keep your chest lifted throughout the movement.
